A bare, lunar national park of eighty-odd islands with almost nothing ashore. Quiet in a way the rest of the Adriatic no longer is.

The Kornati are stone. No villages to speak of, a handful of konobas on concession moorings, and a landscape closer to the Aegean than the rest of Croatia. Afternoon thermals run 3 to 4, occasionally 5. The trade-off for the emptiness is exposure: there is very little shelter inside the park if the Bora arrives, which it can do in May and September.

Worth the detour

• Kornati park mooring buoys and the konobas
• Telašćica cliffs and the salt lake
• Krka waterfalls up the river from Šibenik
• Žirje and Kaprije for empty bays

Watch out for

• Park entry fees apply and are checked
• Very little shelter from the Bora inside the park
• Provisioning is thin, stock up before you go in
